International Artist, Soccer legend and musician celebrate Swansea Cafe launch
3 October 2013
Cassata, the new Italian cafe in Uplands, opened on Friday 30th August 2013 with former Swansea City player, Lee Trundle, and broadcaster, writer and entertainer, Mal Pope in attendance.
Cassata, named after an Italian ice cream dessert, served guests 18 flavours of ice cream that are all made on the premises, from its rotating display unit - one of only 3 in the country.
The cafe has actively tried to keep food miles to a minimum and will serve locally sourced food, including frozen yoghurt, sorbets, pizza, lunch and breakfast treats, plus the very best selection in quality coffee.
The cafe is also home to an exhibition preview of the 18-metre Instagram Wall Sculpture by London based Welsh artist, Tracey Moberly.
Moberly, who has previously exhibited at Tate Modern and Tate Britain, has created the wall sculpture with over 100 mobile phone images, crafted on the Instagram social media application. The mobile phone photography is based on old and new graffiti and street art between London and Berlin, focusing on both topical and lesser- known street artists.
The second part of the Cassata Instagram wall sculpture will combine the busy city life of London and Berlin with the quieter coastal beauty of Mumbles. This features a series titled 'Seascape: Mumbles Morning' which captures the natural beauty of this bay and its changing skyline over a two year period.
The exhibition runs until March 2014 with the first of the bi-annual themes titled 'Graffiti: London to Berlin.'
Cassata is the latest venture by Dennis and Irena Dwyer, who have run Ripples cafe on the seafront between West Cross and Mumbles for 13 years.
Dennis said, "We chose Uplands as it is free from coffee chains like Starbucks and Costa and with the Farmers Market, locally owned bars and cafes, it is a vibrant and exciting place to start a new business."
"The cafe looks like something out of a chic London neighbourhood, with art lighting and furniture which really makes a bold splash," he added.
